Maybe You Were Made for More Freedom

I want to be careful here because there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a job. Honest work is honorable. A career can provide stability, purpose, relationships, experience, benefits, and opportunities to serve.

Some people genuinely love their careers. They enjoy the structure, the work they do, and the people they serve. That may be exactly where they are supposed to be.

But I also know what it feels like when that is not your experience. For me, jobs often felt confining. There was always something inside of me that wanted the freedom to create, decide, build, and determine how I used my time. And I know I am not the only person who has ever felt that way.

There are people waking up every morning feeling trapped in a routine they never really chose. They spend most of their waking hours working to pay for a home they barely have time to enjoy. They love their families, but much of their time belongs to someone else's schedule. They have ideas they would love to pursue, ministries they would love to support, places they would love to go, and things they would love to create, but they cannot yet see how any of that could become possible.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO BUILD TOWARD GREATER FREEDOM.

I cannot tell you exactly what the path will look like for your household. It may involve a business. It may involve investments. It may involve developing another income stream. It may involve a career change. It may involve an opportunity you have not discovered yet. There is no single formula. But I do not believe we should accept the idea that one paycheck, one employer, and one way of earning are the only possibilities available to us.

A Job Can Be a Resource, Not a Limitation

Maybe instead of asking, “How do I escape my job?” a better question is:

HOW CAN I USE WHAT I HAVE TODAY TO BEGIN BUILDING WHAT I WANT TOMORROW?

Your job may actually be helping provide the seed. It may be funding your household while you learn something new. It may be giving you skills you can eventually use elsewhere. It may provide the income that allows you to save, invest, start something small, or develop another source of income.

Sometimes the job is not the destination. It is part of the bridge. I have seen people begin building something alongside their careers until what they were building eventually became large enough to give them another choice. That possibility matters. You do not necessarily have to walk away from something tomorrow. You can begin planting today.

There Is a Difference Between Income and Freedom

For many households, income is linear. We work our hours, and then we are paid according to a schedule. Maybe every week, every other week, twice a month, or once a month.

But expenses do not wait patiently for payday. Money is flowing out constantly. Food, housing, transportation, children, bills, repairs, subscriptions, giving, recreation, and everyday life continually require resources. For many people, there is only one major stream feeding all of those different outflows. That can create enormous pressure.

People who learn to build multiple sources of income begin changing that equation. That does not mean money magically appears without work. It does not mean every opportunity will succeed. It simply means that income is no longer dependent entirely upon one source.

There is something powerful about developing resources that can produce in different ways. A business can produce income. An appropriate investment may produce returns. Intellectual property may produce income. A service can be offered beyond a regular job. A product can be sold more than once. Property may become productive. A skill can create opportunities in different places. The point is not that everyone should do all of these things.

THE POINT IS THAT THERE ARE POSSIBILITIES.

What Could Produce Beyond Your Hours?

That is one of the questions I want people to begin asking.

WHAT COULD I BUILD THAT IS NOT PERMANENTLY LIMITED TO THE EXACT NUMBER OF HOURS I PERSONALLY WORK?

Maybe the answer is something small at first. That is fine. Most things that eventually multiply begin small. Someone may start earning an additional few hundred dollars. Then they learn more. They develop their skills. They become more consistent. They improve their systems. What began as something small may eventually become significant.

For some people, an additional income stream may simply create breathing room. For someone else, it may eventually replace part of their employment income. For another person, it may grow into a full-time business. The outcome will not be the same for everyone, and no legitimate opportunity should promise that it will be. But the possibility of freedom matters. Sometimes people need someone to show them that another path can exist before they can even begin imagining it for themselves.

More Capacity Means More Opportunity to Give

Then there is another side of multiplication that matters deeply to me. When you have more capacity, you have more capacity to give.

You can help someone. You can support a cause. You can fund ministry. You can respond when a family is in need. You can invest in young people. You can help create an opportunity for somebody else. You can support things that matter to you instead of simply wishing you could. That is where wealth becomes much more interesting to me. It stops being only about accumulation.

IT BECOMES ABOUT CAPACITY.

Greater resources can mean greater ability to say yes when God puts an opportunity to serve in front of you.

What If We Started Believing What Scripture Says About Us?

Scripture contains powerful pictures of God's people flourishing, producing, lending, building, giving, and becoming fruitful. Deuteronomy speaks about being the head and not the tail, being above and not beneath, and lending rather than continually being in the position of borrowing.

I do not think those passages give us permission to turn faith into a promise that every believer will become wealthy or that financial difficulty means someone lacks faith. Scripture is much richer than that. But I do think these passages should challenge the small expectations we sometimes accept for ourselves.

We can become so conditioned to surviving that we stop imagining fruitfulness. We become so accustomed to debt that we cannot imagine becoming lenders. We become so accustomed to consuming that we do not imagine ownership. We become so accustomed to receiving instructions that we stop creating. We become so accustomed to scarcity that multiplication almost sounds foreign.

MAYBE PART OF RETURNING TO GOD'S WORD IS ALLOWING IT TO EXPAND WHAT WE BELIEVE IS POSSIBLE.
