Today’s Scripture
Genesis 21:17-19Reflection
Then something extraordinary happens in Hagar's story. God heard Ishmael. God spoke to Hagar. And Genesis tells us: “God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.”
That verse is the heart of this devotional. The Scripture doesn't describe Hagar creating the well. She saw it. The woman who believed there was no water suddenly recognized provision she had not been able to see.
Stress can narrow our vision. Fear does it. Grief does it. Financial pressure does it. Disappointment does it. When our minds are consumed by what is wrong, our ability to notice possibilities can shrink.
Hagar's story gives me permission to pray: “God, open my eyes.”
Show me what I am not seeing. Bring something to my remembrance. Give me wisdom. Show me the person I should talk to. Show me the resource I've overlooked. Show me the opportunity I dismissed. Show me the thing in my house. Show me the well.
And what God opens our eyes to may require us to move.
What Do You Believe?
Do you believe God can help you see what you have not been able to see?
Before you decide there is no way forward, leave room for the possibility that you do not see everything God sees.
For Your House
Look again at yesterday's problem. What have you remembered? What possibility deserves investigation? Who could provide wise counsel? What resource have you overlooked? What question haven't you asked?
One Step Today
Take ten quiet minutes with no phone, no scrolling and no problem-solving.
Pray: “Lord, open my eyes.” Then write down what comes to mind. Pray over it, compare it with Scripture, seek wisdom where needed, and pay attention to what deserves further exploration.
Prayer
Lord, open my eyes. Show me what fear, stress, disappointment or familiarity have made difficult to see. Give me discernment. Help me recognize what You are showing me and give me wisdom about what to do with it. Amen.
